The Atlantic Companies® Advises Homeowners To Watch for Unwanted Summer Party Guest: Danger
NEW YORK, NY, (June 21, 2007) -- Homeowners can find danger an unwanted guest at summer gatherings — unless they manage three "danger zones," noted Dan Olmsted, president and CEO of The Atlantic Companies, which is best known for the Atlantic Master Plan package insurance policy for homeowners.
"Every party plan should start and end with consideration of safety," said Olmsted. "It’s the way to keep guests safe and have the most fun."
The Atlantic Companies offers advice about these "danger zones" in the summer 2007 issue of its free SafetyWise consumer newsletter, which can be found at www.atlanticmasterplan.com.
Homeowners can take steps to manage party risks:
Alcohol
- Close the bar 90 minutes before the party ends. Only time sobers someone.
- Never serve alcohol to anyone under the legal drinking age. Never ask children to serve, mix or carry alcohol.
- Ask guests to appoint designated non-drinking drivers. Tell guests that drinking and driving is unacceptable.
- Do not allow an atmosphere where drinking is mandatory to have fun.
Grills
- Mark a safe zone around the barbecue. Keep children and pets out of it.
- Let kids help in ways that keep them away from the grill.
Swimming Pools
About half of child drownings occur in the pools of neighbors, family and friends. Almost 70 percent of pool accidents occur when the child was not thought to be at or in the pool.
- Always supervise. Drownings can happen quickly and silently.
- If a child is missing, always check the pool first.
The newsletter also discusses the spring storms that demonstrated the importance of insurance coverage for water and sewer backup.
